MAKAUT (Formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT)) came into existence on the recommendation of an expert committee set up on December, 31st, 2008 by the Government of West Bengal under the chairmanship of Mr. Ashesh Prasad Mitra, an eminent scientist. The University exam into operation formally with effect from January 15, 2001 as a sequel to the promulgation of the West Bengal University of Technology Act, 2000 under the West Bengal Act XV of 2000.The basic objective of WBUT is to organize undergraduate courses of study in sciences, engineering, technology, and management education with a view to producing scientists, technologists, and managers of high calibre, capable of contributing towards the development of industries. The University is also to develop Centre of Excellence for higher studies and research in the above areas. Some important missions of MAKAUT are
1) To organize distance education for students and continuing education programs for updating the knowledge and skills of working professionals
2) To create awareness in the key areas of environmental science, conservation of energy and resource, emerging technologies
3) To organize and offer consultancy services to industries and other organizations.
